DELE Examination Levels

There are 6 different levels of DELE:

Diploma de Español Nivel A1 (Starter level):
This qualification attests to sufficient linguistic ability for a very basic range of the most commonly simple expressions used in the Spanish-speaking world and in order to satisfy inmediate needs of a concrete type.

Diploma de Español Nivel A2 (Waystage or Elementary level):
This qualification attests to sufficient linguistic ability for understanding a basic range of the commonly simple and immediate relevance of expressions used in the Spanish-speaking world (basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).

Diploma de Español Nivel B1 (Inicial / Beginner level):
This qualification attests to sufficient linguistic ability for understanding and responding appropriately in most normal day-to-day situations and for expressing desires and needs in a basic way.

Diploma de Español Nivel B2 (Intermedio / Intermediate level):
This qualification validates sufficient linguistic ability to get by in average day-to-day situations in normal communication circumstances, which do not require specialized use of the language.

Diploma de español Nivel C1:
At this level, users are expected to be able to use the structures of a language with ease and fluency. Users are able to adapt their language use to a variety of social situations, and express opinions and take part in discussiones and arguments in a culturally acceptable way. 

Diploma de Español Nivel C2 (Superior / Proficiency level):
This qualification accredits the necessary linguistic competence to integrate in situations requiring an advanced use of the language and knowledge of the cultural customs embedded within it.  

What DELE Exam level should I chose?

The level of DELE you chose to obtain depends on your objectives and on your general Spanish language skills. This certificate is very complete, as the different parts of all six exams involve testing reading, writing and speaking skills.

The level A1: The student can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly.

The level A2: The student can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance. He also can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information and describe in simple terms aspects of his background and his immediate environment.

The level B1: The student can understand the main points of clear standard input. Can deal with most situations, produce simple connected text, describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

The level B2: The student can understand the main ideas of complex text, including technical discussions in his field of specialization. He also can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity with native speakers and produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on general topics.

The level C1: The student can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning. He also can express himself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expression and use language flexibly and effectively and produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects.

The level C2: The student can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. He also can summarize information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation and express himself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations.
