How is the DELE exam structured?

Syllabus and Content of the DELE Diploma: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2

Spanish DELE exam in Spain, Madrid 5 skills are evaluated through each level:  
  • Reading comprehension
  • Written expression
  • Listening comprehension
  • Grammar and vocabulary
  • Oral expression

Level  A1 - Syllabus and Contents of the DELE Diploma

Part 1: Reading comprehension

- Reading Comprehension (45 min.)

  • Answer correctly to 9  questions with multiple choice on 3 texts. The length of the text will not be more than 800 words.   4 tasks 9 questions based on texts, with multiple choice.
  • Link a series of fragmented sentences to a maximum of 10.

Part 2: Listening comprehension

- Listening Comprehension (20 min.)

  • 4 tasks based on four recordings, 25 questions with multiple choice.The candidate will be given 4 tasks based on global ideas and simple sentences, read slowly and clearly. He/She must be able to catch the key information and choose the right answer. 

Part 3: Writing expression and interaction

- Written Expression and Interaction (25 min.)

  • Two productions, including one of 30 words. The candidate must provide personal basic facts, write mere sentences on identity or on the immediate environment, and be able to exchange messages of courtesy, mere personal information.

Part 4: Oral expression and interaction

- Oral Expression and Interaction (15 min.) 4 Tasks:

  • Oral introduction of the candidate (1-2 min)
  •  Development of a theme (2-3 min)
  •  Conversation with the examinator (3-4 min)
  •  Dialogs based on graphic materials (2-3 min)


The candidate needs the qualification “Apto” in each group (taken the same day). To pass the exam, the candidate can get a maximum of 100 points, and must get 33 points in each group to get the global qualification “Apto” and obtain the DELE diploma.

Level  A2 - Syllabus and Contents of the DELE Diploma

Part 1: Reading comprehension

- Reading Comprehension (60 min.). The examinee should:.

  • Understand texts with simple sentences like rules, instructions or restaurant menus and get the key information.
  • Answer choosing the right option to a multiple choice questionnaire based on short texts.
  • Recognize nouns, words or sentences and catch the meaning of informative material or instructions.

Part 2: Listening comprehension 

- Listening Comprehension (35 min.)

  • The candidate will have 5 tasks which goals is to catch global ideas from mere recorded statements, radio posts or phone conversations, transmitted clearly and slowly.

Part 3: Writing expression and interaction

- Written Expression and Interaction. (50 min.)

  • Fill out a form with personal information in a proper way. (30-40 words)
  • Write a letter about his/her family and personal environment. (70-80 words)
  • Write a descriptive or narrative text based on the given information. (70-80 words)

Part 4: Oral expression and interaction

- Oral Expression and Interaction (15 min.)

  • Monolog (3-4 min.): the candidate must provide basic information.
  • Description from a photograph (2-3 min.)
  • Simulation – dialog with the examinator from the photograph (2-3 min.)
  • Simulation about a feature of the day to day life (3-4 min.)


The candidate needs the qualification “Apto” in each group (taken the same day). To pass the exam, the candidate can get a maximum of 100 points, and must get 33 points in each group to get the global qualification “Apto” and obtain the DELE diploma.

Level B1- Syllabus and Contents of the DELE Diploma

Spanish DELE exam questions, Spain MadridPart 1: Reading comprehension 

- Reading Comprehension (70 min.) 

  • Answer multiple choice questions based on texts.
  • Answer questions by getting information from a text.

Part 2: Listening comprehension

- Listening Comprehension (40 min.)

  •  4 exercises on simple dialogue and/or recorded information

Part 3: Writing expression and interaction

- Written Expression (60 min.)

  • Write two texts: the first could be a letter or a forum message, an e-mail, or a blog entry. The second one could be a journal entry, a biography and it could include descriptions or narrations, presentation of information and personal opinions.

Part 4: Oral expression and interaction

-  Oral Expression (15 min. + 15 min. preparation)

  • The candidate must be able to have a conversation with the examinator. Graphic materials may serve to start the conversation.


The candidate must get the qualification “Apto” in each group. To pass the exam, the candidate can get a maximum of 100 points, and must get 70 % of right answers in each group to get the global qualification “Apto” and obtain the DELE diploma.

Level B2 - Syllabus and Contents of the DELE Diploma

Part 1: Reading comprehensionSpanish writing exam DELE, Spain Madrid

- Reading Comprehension (70 min.)

  • Answer to 12 multiple choice questions on 4 texts which lenght will not be more than 450 words.

Part 2: Listening comprehension

- Listening Comphension (40 min.)

  • Answer to 12 multiple choice questions on 4 recorded texts as advertisings, news, conversations or interviews.
Part 3: Writing expression and interaction

- Written Expression (80 min.)

  • The candidate will write two texts. The first will be a letter, which could be formal or informal, in which ideas and subjects will be expressed clearly and detailed in a structured way respecting the characteristics and convention of the genre. The second one will be an opinion article for a newspaper, a blog or a magazine.
Part 4: Oral expression and interaction

- Oral Expression (interview with a jury) (20 min.)

  • The task is to create a brief structured monologue and talk about a series of possible ways to solve a problem. Options will be offered which can be chosen to prepare the argumentation.


The candidate must get the qualification “Apto” in each group. To pass the exam, the candidate can get a maximum of 100 points, and must get 70 % of right answers in each group to get the global qualification “Apto” and obtain the DELE Diploma.

Level C1 - Syllabus and Contents of the DELE Diploma

Part 1: Reading comprehension and use of language

- Reading Comprehension and use of language (90 min.). The candidate will:

  • Understand the global idea and specific information in public and professional context (texts of 700-800 words), and choose the correct answer to a multiple choice questionnaire.
  • Reconstruct the structure and identify the relations among ideas in long texts (600-700 words), completing paragraphs with long sentences.
  • Identify the content and intention or point of view in news articles and reports (600-700 words) about professional and academic fields, choosing the correct answers to a multiple choice questionnaire.
  • Identify specific and relevant information in short texts (100-150 words), which report facts about academic issues, linking the given texts with short sentences.
  • Identify the structure and the adequate vocabulary in a text with complex linguistic expressions (400-450 words).

Part 2: Listening comprehension and use of  language

- Listening Comprehension and use of  language (80 min.). The candidate has to:

  • Understand the key points and be able to extract specific datas from a text, indentify the one who is talking, and determine his/her attitude/feelings/intentions.
  • Fill sentences and/or words in a text and he will have to answer to multiple choice questions.

Part 3: Listening comprehension and written expression and interaction

- Integrated skills – Listening comprehension and written expression and interaction (50 min.). The candidate wil:

  • Listen to a record and restitute writing an article of 220-250 words to expose and focus on the main ideas of the record
  • Write a text of 220-250 words, exposing clearly his/her mind.

Part 4: Reading comprehension and oral expression and interacion

- Integrated skills – Reading Comprehension and Oral Expression and interaction (interview with a jury) (20 min. and 20 min. of preparation). The candidate will:

  • Create a monolog about a brief text, discuss and debate about the opinion that has been expressed before, take part to a formal conversation based on graphic materials with the jury.


The candidate needs the qualification “Apto” in each group to pass the exam. He/She can get a maximum of 100 points, and must get 33 points in each group to get the global qualification “Apto” and obtain the DELE diploma.

Level C2 - Syllabus and Contents of the DELE Diploma

Part 1: Use of language, reading and listening comprehension 

- Use of language, Reading Comprehension and Listening Comprehension (105 min.). The candidate will:

  • Answer 9 multiple choice questions on 3 texts which lenght will not be higher tan 800 words.
  • Link 10 segments of sentences.
  • Answer 16 multiple choice questions on 4 recorded texts. The records will be conversations among two or more people, or news transmitted thought media channels.Spanish oral exam DELE, Spain Madrid

Part 2: Listening and reading comprehension and writing expression 

- Integrated skills: Listening and Reading Comprehension and Writing Expression (150 min.).  The candidate will write:

  • a mail referring to topic that are not private (texts between 150 and 200 words).
  • a  composition (texts between 150 and 200 words).

Part 3: Reading comprehension and oral expression and interactio

- Integrated skills – Reading Comprehension and Oral Expression and Interaction (20 min. and 30 min. of preparation). The candidate will:

  • Create a brief structured monologue and talk about a series of possible ways to solve a problem. Options will be offered which can be chosen to prepare the argumentation. 


The candidate needs the qualification “Apto” in each group to pass the exam. He/She can get a maximum of 100 points, and must get 70 % of right answers in each group to get the global qualification “Apto” and obtain the DELE diploma.
