Madrid is surrounded by the so-called Cuencas which are natural areas situated around the local rivers. The local mountains are good for hiking, have lovely landscapes, river valleys and countryside to enjoy on a day or weekend visit. Madrid has a huge range of cinemas, theatres, and museums. You may find all cinemas and theatres in the “Guia del Ocio” (http://www.guiadelocio.com/madrid/)
Tip: The Cine Princesa shows all films in the original version!
The biggest museums are the Prado, the Reina Sofia, and the Thysszen Borneszima which can all be found on the Paseo del Prado.
In addition there are several smaller state run museums and exhibitions well worthwhile a visit. e.g.
The “Casa Encendida” – one of the biggest – exhibitions, films, concerts and also many different kinds of workshops, Centro Cultura Conde Duque, la Casa América, la Fundación Telefónica, Fundación Caja Madrid etc.
The biggest bookstore is the Casa del Libro en Gran Via 29 and Calle Alcalá 96 (http://www.casadellibro.com/) with a huge selection of books and also books in foreign languages.
Many of the bookstores and used bookstores are located in Calle Libreros, a side street off the Gran Via.
An English Bookstore is located near Alonso Martínez in Calle Fernandéz de la Hoz 40 (http://www.madridteacher.com/booksellers.htm).
A German Bookstore can be found in Calle Principe Vergara 205 (“Librería Alemana”).
