Local laws and costumes

Madrid has introduced a law which prohibits drinking on the streets. Shops aren’t allowed to sell alcohol after 22:00. Up until the introduction of the new law, “botellon” culture (drinking in public places) was very popular amongst Madrid’s youth. The madrilenos have to an extent rebelled against the new law and in many of Madrid’s plazas, botellons continue, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.

Since the beginning of 2006, Spain has introduced a law that prohibits smoking in bars, restaurants, pubs and other public places. Although in reality in the majority of the bars it is still allowed, however the owner of the bar must display a notice which says that smoking is allowed in the establishment ("Se puede fumar en este bar”).
