Where can I find what? - Useful Tips for everyday life

Grocery Stores

One of Spain’s biggest department stores is the “Corte Inglés” where you can find nearly everything you need from clothes to electronic devices and food. Although their prices may not be the cheapest they have many conveniently located stores throughout the city.

In general, you will find a whole bunch of different stores all over Madrid like the “Ahorra Más”, “Champion”, “Caprado”, “Día”, and “Lidl”…

Another big department store is Carrefour. These are mainly situated in the outskirts of Madrid, offering an extensive range of products at competitive prices.

In the quarter around our school you will just find opposite an “Ahorra Más”, a couple of bars along the street, a lot of cafés on the plaza Manuel Becerra and if you head in direction to Goya you will find a “Corte Inglés”. Behind the “Palacio de los Deportes” is a market and also a whole bunch of bars along Calle Goya and Calle Alcalá.

Note: On Sundays nearly all of the shops are closed: Many stores including El Corte Inglés are opened on the first Sunday of the month and there are shops like the “OpenCor” or the “O’clock” which are also opened 24-hours, 7 days/week. Of course there are also many small shops which can be found all over Madrid and many of these are open until late at night.

Pharmacies / Drugstores

Medication of any kind can be purchased from the local pharmacy (farmácia). There are plenty of pharmacies all over Madrid. You just have to look out for a green cross (sometimes flashing).

Tip: In the callejero of the paginas amarillas (http://callejero.paginasamarillas.es/home.asp) you will find pharmacies as well as post offices (correos).
