AIL Madrid Spanish University Preparation Program
Going to University in another country is probably the bravest thing you will ever do! It is daunting. We know. We have been there.
Your new journey will require a lot of thinking and planning. AIL Madrid can assist you along the way. First and foremost, we will help you gain the level of Spanish necessary to gain entrance and succeed at a Spanish University. But there’s more. We can also provide guidance when it comes to choosing your university, facing entrance exams, and completing your university application. In addition, we’ll help you develop your general study skills so that your transition to university life is as smooth as is possible.

So what exactly is the AIL Madrid Spanish University Preparation Program?
The full Program consists of three terms. The first is 16 weeks long and the second two are each 10 weeks long. Whether you need all three terms will depend on your skill level and what you desire to gain from the program. We welcome all skill levels to the Program and will strive to do whatever we can to make your experience as beneficial to you as is possible.
The AIL Madrid Spanish University Preparation Program has four core components. A general description of each component is provided below.
At university you will be studying in Spanish – so you need to be proficient at all the core language skills: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The Spanish University Preparation Program will ensure you:

- can read quickly and accurately
- have strong pronunciation and grammar
- write clearly, correctly and to a high standard
- participate in formal and informal social situations
The course is available in 6 different levels (A1 - C2) that correspond to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
In Term 2 you will start to focus on the specialized vocabulary and usage in the field(s) of your choice (eg. Business, Engineering, Fine Arts, etc.). You will:
- learn how to apply your language skills in an academic context
- learn how to write longer academic essays, take lecture notes, and read university style textbooks
- develop oral communication skills by preparing presentations and participating in formal and informal debates
Upon your arrival at AIL Madrid, you will be assigned an experienced personal advisor who will be available to help you with many things related to your choice of university, the application process, and anything else you may have questions about. They may help you with:
- setting up visits and appointments at potential universities
- completing your university application
- cultural and social differences you may encounter and have questions about
- general university life in Spain
In addition, it is also very important to us to keep track of your academic development while you are here. You will be given regular progress tests and, in addition, be provided one-on-one meetings with your Spanish teacher in order to discuss your development and any issues that may need more focus.
The language is only one of many challenges you will face when starting University. We want to help you with all the general university preparation you may need as well to help make your transition into university life as smooth as possible. As a complement to the language courses, we offer several ‘short courses’ on potential topics of interest to the new university student. Some example topics are:
- research and how to find information: library systems, indexes, computer databases
- essays and assignments: brainstorming – structure - planning – writing
- how to prepare and give a seminar/presentation
- creating bibliographies, tables, and figures for reports
We look forward to welcoming you to Spain and our Spanish University Preparation Program. Your decision to study abroad is an exciting one and we want to help you make the most of it!
