Located in an 18th century building designed by Juan de Villanueva, the Prado is considered to be one of the most important art galleries in the world. It houses masterpieces by Velázquez, Goya, El Greco, Zurbarán, Ribera, Titian, Raphael, Botticelli, Fra Angélico, Rubens, Bosch, Van der Weyden, Poussin, Lorrain, Watteau, Rembrandt, Dürer and Mengs, amongst others.

Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum

At the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, the Permanent Collection and the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection offers an overview of art from the 13th century to the late 20th century. The museum houses a splendid collection ranging from Flemish art to contemporary works. More than 800 paintings, sculptures, carvings, tapestries and other items are displayed.

Reading in Madrid

The biggest bookstore is the “Casa del Libro” at no.29 Gran Vía and no.96 Calle Alcalá with a huge selection of books in Spanish and also other languages. You will find many shops which sell both new and used books in Calle Libreros, a side street off Gran Vía. Also, there is an English Bookstore called booksellers which is located in Calle Fernandéz de la Hoz 40, near Alonso Martínez, as well as a German Bookstore on Calle Principe Vergara 205 (“Librería Alemana”).

Tip: At AIL Madrid there is also a library where you can borrow books which are suitable for your level.
