Chris Haworth Chris Haworth

School Director

British

  • United-Kingdom

Chris is the milk bottle white skinned blondie from a small town near Manchester. You will probably see him in the corridors, since he is always rushing around the school looking like he is on an important {{...}} mission. After 12 years in Madrid, he is more madrileño than most and when he is not busy making sure the rest of us are doing our job properly, his hobbies are relaxing with his wife Miriam (and his 4 year old daughter), eating Indian food, playing poker and running marathons. He is approachable and loves speaking to students so please do introduce yourself to him.

Joanna Joanna

Assistant Director

Polish

  • Poland
  • Spain
  • United-Kingdom
  • Germany

Joanna, if her last name didn’t already give it away, comes from a charming city in the south of Poland, called Sandomierz, that is best known as the location for the country’s most popular TV series! {{...}} But don’t be fooled by her origin: even though she still smiles when she thinks of her home country, she has found true love in Spanish culture and all its facets: language, food, music, and even her husband, Diego! After 4 years in Malaga, Joanna decided to move to Madrid in 2012, where she joined the AIL Madrid team, and has been our assistant director since 2013!

  • United-Kingdom

Le was so fascinated with Spanish that, 5 years ago, he decided to hop on a plane to Spain; and after almost 24 hours of travel and years worth of experiences, he’s still here with us! Before joining {{...}} the AIL team in 2013, he lived in Seville and Salamanca but, the moment he set foot in Madrid, he knew this was where he wanted to be! But if your real question is "where is he from?", and you might hear a rumor in the hallways about Beijing, he will tell you that he’s as Chinese as a Sevillano and as Spanish as a bowl of rice… or was it the other way around ? But the real truth is that Le is an indispensable member of our team, and it's a huge pleasure to see his smile everyday!

Martin Martin

Student Care Team

British

  • United-Kingdom
  • Spain

After losing his luggage on the journey from his hometown (Cambridge, UK), Martin arrived in Madrid for the first time with nothing to cover himself with except his travel insurance. Fortunately, his insurance {{...}} provided him the funds to go shopping. Unfortunately, Martin hates shopping. But fortunately, he ended up finding some great clothes and started life in Madrid with a fresh new look! Martin soon joined the AIL Madrid family in the summer of 2015, where he can now be found each morning in the calming presence of a cup of tea with some biscuits. He’s passionate about football and photography, and is fascinated by geography. If you see him around the school, ask him to name the capitals of the world – he knows them all!

Katharina Katharina

Katharina’s love for Spain, its language and its people all started with a six-day trip to Barcelona that snowballed into eight years of living in the country. She now never plans on leaving! Since joining us {{...}} in early 2016, Katherina has been making every day a brighter one for us with her contagious smile and energy. She loves greeting new people and is always the first to volunteer showing new faces around our school, so be sure to stop by and say hello! Outside of work, Katharina loves dancing and knows all the best places in Madrid to get her groove on to some Soul and Funk.

She loves meeting the international students that walk through the door every day and likens the experience to traveling around the world without ever needing to leave the school. Coming from a tiny village in the depths of the Black Forest in Germany, our wonderful Isabella finds the city of Madrid to be a welcome change and just the right size for her! After graduating {{...}} from high school, Isabella went on a gap year in Chile to live with a host family and attend an intensive Spanish course. This was her first step into the world of Spanish, an experience that determined everything she has been doing since and that eventually brought her to Madrid. She has now lived here for over six years, loves the city with all her heart and enjoys working at AIL and helping others live the same wonderful Spanish experience she once had. Whenever she has the time, Isabella loves escaping the hectic pace of the city to enjoy the nature, silence and peacefulness found out in the mountains.

Hugo, the Frenchman of the office, comes from Boulogne-sur-mer and has been with us at AIL since the start of 2017. He loves watching Formula 1 and his favourite driver is Michael Schumacher. He can’t live without music and he loves discovering new artists and songs. Although he likes going out, he also spends a lot of time relaxing at home, which he says he enjoys a lot. His colleagues say that he likes to joke around and that you can make him laugh easily, so if you see him in the office, don’t hesitate in telling him a joke. He’s also friendly to everyone and he likes to learn languages, something that helps him to meet new people. He likes vintage cars a lot, more specifically Japanese cars. And in Japan’s neighbouring country, Korea, in which he spend a year of his life studying, he loves the food. He has a lot of future travel plans and he’d love to visit Colombia.

Born in San Clemente in California, USA, Steven arrived in Madrid several years ago originally only intending to attend an intensive Spanish course. However, he was so enamoured with his time here {{...}} that he ultimately moved back to the city to live here permanently! Joining AIL in 2017, Steven has since gained a reputation for being one of the chattiest members of our team and regularly shares his lunch with his co-workers – even though he is yet to cook it himself! He enjoys singing, having taken opera lessons when he was younger, and spends many of his Saturdays hosting game nights with his friends. Here in Madrid, his favourite spot is the Plaza Colón (´Colón´ being Christopher Colombus´ Spanish name), as he believes the explorer holds great meaning in both Spain and his native country of America.

Guillermo hails from Torrelavega in Cantabria, Spain, and first moved to Madrid to study English Philology at university. This love of music extends into his other hobbies, as Guillermo enjoys playing both the piano and the guitar and can often be found out dancing with his friends to new songs. When he´s not at work or pursuing his fascination with travel, Guillermo likes nothing more than spending some time in the barrio de Chamberí, where he often goes at the end of the day to enjoy a beer.

Having previously spent an Erasmus year abroad in Cordoba, {{...}} Agata has come to adore dancing. She is a self-described dance fanatic and when she’s not perfecting her salsa and bachata techniques, she’s helping others to learn Zumba as an instructor! To relax after all that movement, Agata enjoys unwinding by the Tempo de Debod with a good book, citing the mysterious atmosphere of the temple as something that draws her back time and time again. If you spot her in our school and fancy saying hello, perhaps you can greet her by her office nickname, “Yogur” (the Spanish word for ’yoghurt’), given after we realised she never fails to eat a whole tub of the Greek variety every afternoon!

Living just outside of central Madrid due to his love of the open air, Ricardo is an avid reader and has even been known to stay up 24 hours’ straight to finish a book he’s hooked on. A natural athlete that loves competing in sports events, Martin vividly remembers how even as a child he would cycle until he was blue in the face.
