FAQ

    • As an Instituto Cervantes accredited Spanish school, we are authorized to issue letters of acceptance for full time students, which are recognized as official proof of study by Spanish consulates and embassies. Once your enrollment is confirmed, we will send you your letter along with other documents required to start your visa process.

    • In order to benefit from a 10% discount and pay no enrollment fee (for courses of 9 weeks and more) it is necessary to pay for the entire course up front. If you don't need study visa, you just need to make a 200€ deposit, and the full payment can be made on your first day of classes.

    • If you haven’t studied any Spanish before, then you will want to start from the very beginning. Unlike other schools, we do not say that complete beginners can start anytime and then just throw them with other students who have already studied: this approach is not best for the student and could cause a tense and unpleasant start to your Spanish learning adventure.
Our policy is to have new complete beginner groups starting every two weeks.
If you cannot make one of these dates, please do tell so we can send you all the appropriate learning materials to prepare before coming to Madrid (at no additional cost) and/or offer you private catch up classes on arrival.

    • The long term course is an extended version of the Intensive course, with the same 20 classes/week schedule. Those who join the course for 8 weeks or more at a time enjoy a reduced price of 170€/week instead of 190€/week and, after booking 9 weeks or more at a time, we waive the enrollment fee and include all textbooks as well.

    • With regards to your progress, you will have better results if you sign up for the long term course. In 8 weeks or more, you will become more fluent, improve your speaking ability, broaden your vocabulary, and see your grammar advance substantially. There is the added reward of enjoying a weekly discount as well: when booking 8 weeks or more, the price drops from 190€/week to 170€/week. If booking 9 weeks or more, the enrollment fee is waived and text books are included in the program.

    • With the Intensive (and Long Term) Course schedule, it usually takes between 10 and 12 weeks to complete a level, such as A1 or A2. That said, it is important to note that students’ progress depends on their learning style, aptitude for languages, and the time and effort they are willing to put into learning and practicing. It can also be influenced by their native language and the other languages they speak. If your objective is to learn as much as possible in a defined period of time, it’s important you dive deep into your Spanish studies: spend time revising class content, complete your homework, practice with natives outside class, listen to Spanish music, watch Spanish movies, read Spanish books and magazines, and watch yourself improve rapidly!

    • To save your place on the course we require a 200€ down payment in order to reserve your place. The remaining amount is due on your first day of classes and needs to be paid in full in order to benefit from the discounted price and special conditions.
*Please note that this payment will be higher if you need a study visa to come to Spain and require AIL Madrid to send you a visa invitation letter

    • The Intensive Spanish Course includes 20 weekly group classes, while the Premium Spanish Course includes the same 20 classes in groups plus 5 additional private lessons that are completely focused on your needs and objectives. Your teacher will create a detailed needs analysis before the start of your course, in order to carefully tailor your individual study program.

    • The 20 weekly group classes have the same schedule as the Intensive course: 9.00-12.50 or 13.00-16.50 and your 5 private lessons will be scheduled and confirmed according to your group class schedule.

    • This course allows you to focus on elements you don’t fully understand or would like to practice more during your private lessons. If you advance in the general material as well, we can place you in higher level the following week after receiving your teacher’s evaluation of your progress.

    • AIL Spanish classes are dynamic, fun, and interactive, so you will never be bored or burned out in class. This is one of our most preferred learning options since our students feel it allows them to get the most out of their stay here in Madrid.

    • Before you start, you will be asked to provide us with detailed information on your current Spanish level and your objectives for your private classes. Based on that information, one of our fantastic teachers will create a 100% personalized study program, choosing the best learning materials and diverse exercises to ensure that your personal study objectives are met and exceeded!

    • You will never repeat the exact same material in any of your classes, though you may review similar exercises to solidify your understanding of certain items. If you stay consistently enrolled and attend all your classes, you (and the material) will advance week by week. Regarding activities, we have over 80 options that allow you to explore the city sights, museums, discuss interesting topics, and practice your Spanish.

    • All of our students who have chosen the course have taken it in their stride. There are breaks in between the different classes to give you time to unwind, with one for 30 minutes and another for 10. This allows you to get some fresh air, eat something or simply relax a little before the next class.

    • It completely depends on your objectives and your personal way of learning. Some students learn better being in a group, as they can share ideas with other students and interact with people. Other students prefer to combine group lessons with one-on-one classes to clear up any doubts they have under the individual attention of a personal tutor. You can also use the individual classes to focus on a theme that you have a particular interest in and build your vocabulary base related to it. So, as you can see, it really depends on you and how you as an individual learn best.

    • With this course, we offer 30 Spanish classes per week (6 a day from Monday to Friday). The classes are taught in two different groups (one group for 20 of the classes and another for the remaining 10). The class timetable will be from 9:00 to 14:40 or 11:10 to 16:50, depending on your level and our available groups. Bear in mind that the two groups will be at similar levels (for instance, lower B1 and intermediate B1), but they will not necessarily be the exact same level. The programme can be started any Monday of the year, so you can join whenever suits you best.

    • This course is typically only available from level A1.2 onwards.

    • Our academic coordinators are highly qualified and will analyse the Spanish level test and self-evaluation that we will ask you to complete before your arrival in order to find a group that matches your level of Spanish language skills and knowledge. However, if after your first day of class you feel as though the group you have been placed in is too easy or too difficult, let us know! We will test your Spanish once more to place you in a more suitable group for your level.

    • AIL Madrid uses textbooks recommended by Instituto Cervantes that endeavor to provide the best methodology of Spanish teaching, complemented by a range of audio/visual materials, handouts, the school's own materials, and the internet.

    • Each student, upon request, receives an attendance certificate once they finish the course and has the option to take an exam at the end of the course. In order to receive a completion certificate, the student must obtain a passing grade of 60/100 or more.

    • Each student receives an attendance certificate upon finishing the course.

    • -第一本教科书和所有必需的学习材料

      -西班牙语水平评估(上课时间以外)

      -课程出勤证书

    • 每位学生在完成课程后都会收到课程出勤结课证书

    • Your teacher will customize the lessons according to your objectives and, if one of those is to follow a book, then the classes will follow a book of your choice. While the teachers often use books while planning the lessons, if you want to follow a specific book and be able to take it home, you will need to purchase it on your own or from AIL (if available).

    • Yes! The classes do not necessarily have to take place at the school. We are located next to Retiro Park, so some students prefer to take a class there or even in a nearby cafe. Other options include lessons in markets, museums or a particular neighbourhood of Madrid. Arranging exterior locations can require some planning so it is always best to book these types of private lessons in advance.

    • We do ask for the full payment of classes before they are given but, if you are booking many classes and do not want to pay everything at once, you can elect to pay a 100€ deposit initially. Once the classes commence you can pay for the rest in stages. However, 10 classes or more need to be paid for at the same time (not in stages) to be eligible for the 5€/class discount.

    • There is no age limit for private classes: anybody of any age can take them.

    • Yes, the classes can be arranged whenever you want, as long as there is a teacher available. We have many teachers and can accommodate most schedules. When booking, please tell us your availability and preferred schedule so we can endeavor to find an available teacher who can teach you during those times.

    • Yes! If you want to join a group that has already started, we will not charge you for the classes you have missed. Please contact us for further information and available groups.

    • Yes! You can sign up for another 12 weeks and continue on without missing a beat!

    • This type of course is only offered once a week, either on Fridays or on Saturdays, so unfortunately your class cannot be made up at another time. If you have to miss a class, we suggest asking your teacher what material will be covered that week and so you can review it at home and stay up to date.

    • Our Weekend Course consists of 3 weekly Spanish classes either on Friday or on Saturday. We use an innovative communication-based approach, proven to be the most effective in learning foreign languages. You will learn the various linguistic skills you need to communicate in Spanish by really interacting in the language from day 1. Emphasis is placed on interactive activities such as role-play, discussions, interviews, current news stories, video and audio materials, games or pair-work, all backed up with a modern, colorful textbook. The groups are small (max. 10 and 6 students on average) which give you plenty of opportunities to step in and interact while having your teacher’s constant guidance and feedback. You will also learn how to fit in and feel comfortable in social situations in Spain. Oh, and of course, all teaching will take place exclusively in Spanish!

    • We currently have 27 groups in our Spanish Evening Course with the following schedules and levels:

The next complete beginners evening group will start on the 16th of October, on Mondays and Wednesday 18:30 - 20:00 PM.

    • The next complete beginners Evening Course starts on New groups for total beginners start every 3 weeks.

    • We realise that due to external commitments you won't always be able to come to class. This is why we allow you to cancel Evening Classes and make them up at a later date! All you have to do is inform the Student Care Team by e-mail at least 1 working day / 24 hours before the scheduled time of the class (except on weekends or bank holidays that cancellations are not possible). We are the only Spanish school in Madrid that allows classes to be cancelled, meaning that you only pay for the classes that you come to!

    • If the connection breaks on your side, we will not be able to do anything as your personal Internet access is out of our control. However, if the connection fails on our side (an event that almost never occurs, except for rare issues such as general power cuts/ problems with the network provider), we will postpone the class to be resumed at another time that is convenient for you.

    • The Skype classes are individual lessons, meaning you can choose the schedule that suits your own personal preferences. Classes may be held from Monday to Saturday at any time between 8:30 and 22:00.

    • Your teacher will give you all the material that you need and we will send you links to exercise pages and resources that you can use to study with both during classes and in your own free time. As the Skype lessons are organised to meet your own personal flow and needs, you will get to decide whether you want to be given homework or not.

    • If for any reason you are unable to attend a class, it’s no problem at all. We are the only school in Madrid that will allow you to cancel a class and make it up at any other time.
To cancel a class, you only need to email us with at least 24 hours of warning during the working week (from Monday to Friday; that is to say that a Monday class cannot be cancelled on Sunday).

    • As private classes are tailored to your preferences, you can choose whether to have them with the same teacher or not. In general, however, we advise that you book all your classes to be with the same teacher given that it is easier for one individual to organise a learning plan for you. You will also have better continuity with your classes and will see better results in a shorter period of time. However, if you want to have more variety and would like to have classes with multiple teachers, this is not an issue. You only have to ask!

    • You can take a trial class for €35 to see if you enjoy our teaching. If you do, you can then sign up for however many more classes you would like to take.

    • Each student receives an attendance certificate upon finishing the course and has the option to take an exam at the end of the course. Your certificate will be sent to your home address via post.

    • Yes. Simply inform us (using the contact form) at least 24 hours before the scheduled time of the class. Please note that classes can only be cancelled from Monday to Friday. It's not possible to cancel a Monday class on Saturday/Sunday.

    • The one-off enrollment fee includes:

      • First textbook and all required learning materials

    • We always consider the fact that you are travelling with a friend or partner when scheduling your group classes and will endeavor to place you in classes at the same time. Though it is not something we can 100% guarantee, it is almost always possible thanks to the large amount of group classes available. The further in advance a course is booked, the easier it is for us to arrange (as we do for the vast majority of cases), allowing you to enjoy Madrid together in your free time.

    • The course can be booked right up to the week before the course starts, but it is always best to book as early as possible.

    • During this program, there will be a greater number of 50+ students than normal, so there is strong change there will be other 50+ students in your class. However, the group you are in will be determined by your Spanish level and not your age, so there will be a mix of ages in your class. The program activities, however, will be exclusively for 50+ students.

    • Yes: the cost to attend is 40€ for the week, plus the cost of entry if taking a dance class/attending a flamenco show.

Once your enrollment is confirmed, we will send you your letter along with other documents required to start your visa process.

    • We welcome many students who come to study for extended periods, including: gap year, work leave, working as au pairs, or simply coming to learn Spanish. It is very common for our students to join for months at a time in their quest to become fluent in Spanish.

    • Students with some previous knowledge of Spanish can start any Monday of the year. In case you have never had any Spanish classes before you should pick one of our start dates for absolute beginners you can check it here.

    • In case you need to interrupt your long term course for any commitment and you notify us in advance, we can pause your studies. For the conditions regarding your time off, please contact us.

Have you been thinking about any destination in particular? If you are not sure, let us know how many cities you would like to visit and we will suggest the best itinerary!

    • Yes, please contact us with your plans, including how long and where would you like to study and we will prepare a personalized quote according to your study and travel plans.

    • In order to book your Multi Location program, the full payment is required upfront.

    • Our partnering art teachers are experts in all styles of painting and drawing, so you can choose whichever one you like! Try your hand or hone your skills with pencil drawing, abstract art, oil painting, watercolors etc. We also offer pottery (ceramics) classes!

    • Art classes take place in an open studio where each student works on their own piece of art. The teacher provides individual instruction to each student over the course of the lesson, with the student working at their own pace. Students can make multiple works of art, or come back to one piece over the course of several sessions.

    • Group classes typically have between 3 to 7 students.

    • All our professors are native Spanish speakers and the classes will take place primarily in Spanish. That said, many of the teachers have at least a basic understanding of English.

    • Classes are available on Saturday mornings, but Saturday afternoon and Sundays will depend on the availability of the teachers and classrooms.

      • Determine whether you need a study visa and if so, make sure you allow sufficient time to obtain one.
      • Be sure to make a copy of all of your travel documents and leave the copy at home.
      • Bring a couple copies of your passport with you and store them in a different place than your passport.
      • Bring enough money with you to cover both expected expenditures and emergency costs during your travel to Madrid.
      • Organize international health insurance and travel insurance.
      • See your doctor before you go.
      • Be sure to bring a sufficient supply of any prescriptions you require.
      • Think about what countries you may want to visit while you are here and be sure to obtain any recommended vaccinations/medications.
      • Be sure to familiarize yourself with local laws and customs – especially with regard to alcohol.
      • Do your research! A good guide book (such as Lonely Planet) can make a huge difference in your stay. Familiarize yourself with what you’d like to visit and see in the capital, as well as the places you’ll be studying, living, etc. You may also want to take a look at the metro map, or just pick one up at the school or metro station once you arrive.
      • If you want to get a head start, AIL also offers Skype classes so you can brush up on the basics before you arrive.

    • You can choose between Salsa and Bachata and their respective styles: Salsa Cubana, Salsa and Bachata En Linea (New York Style) and traditional Salsa and Bachata.

    • Internships are not paid. AIL Madrid organises internships for interested parties to gain first-hand experience into the Spanish job sector of their choice This is to allow the applicant to gain skills and build their CV.

    • You will need to have a minimum of an intermediate level of Spanish, or B1, to be able to communicate with your co-workers, employer and clients. In tourism companies and some other unusual cases, the level of Spanish required may be lower. If you do not have a B1 level of Spanish, we recommend that you enrol onto one of our General Spanish Courses or sign up to individual classes. This will boost your Spanish to the required level in the shortest time possible.

    • Unfortunately, this is not possible once the internships have started. We would recommend instead that you make the most of the unique opportunity to work in a job market different to your own home country.

    • With this program you will live an incredible experience in Spain. So, as we know that sometimes it is difficult to find the company of your dreams the first time, you will be able to interview with up to 3 companies to get the internship of your dreams. We are experts in finding the internship that best fits your profile, so you will surely have a total feeling with the first company and you won't need any more attempts.

    • If the company is very satisfied with your work, it is possible you will receive an offer. However, AIL Madrid is not involved with this external decision and we cannot guarantee you a permanent job offer from a third-party company under any circumstances. The decision falls entirely into the hands of the company you intern at.

    • The Business Spanish Course consists of specialised classes lead by a teacher qualified on the taught material. These classes may be one-to-one or taught in mini groups with students of a similar focus and level of Spanish. There is also the option for companies to enrol interested employees onto business Spanish classes held at offices or employee homes. For more information on this, write to us.

    • The course content is totally flexible and can be adapted to the specific needs of the student. You can choose to cover sector-specific language (banking, diplomacy, etc.) or language related to more general work situations (presentations, meetings, negotiations, formal text writing…)

    • The Business Spanish Course has been designed for professionals who need to use their Spanish knowledge in a commercial context, while a normal Spanish intensive course covers only general grammatical and cultural topics. Working one-on-one, in mini groups or in groups of a reduced size also accelerates the rate of learning and allows classes to be customised to meet individual needs as much as possible.

    • We offer all kinds of specialised Spanish lessons. For more information, contact us.

    • Our preparation courses for the Spanish GCSE, A-Level and Scottish Higher exam are taught by highly qualified, experienced native Spanish teachers, who will share with you their in-depth knowledge of the demands made upon examination candidates and show you how to best approach the exam. You will feel both encouraged and motivated by the techniques our teachers use, as they explain even the most difficult language issues in a fun and enjoyable way, making every lesson memorable.

    • Staying with a host family during your Spanish GCSE,A-Level and Scottish Higher Revision Course will give you an excellent opportunity not only to experience all the Spanish norms and customs, but also to immensely improve your Spanish as you pick up new colloquial phrases and sayings which you can take straight into your exams!

You will find your Spanish host families to be very friendly and welcoming, and in addition to all the help they can give you with regards to the language, you will taste the culinary delights of the traditional Spanish meals prepared by your host family.

All our families have been carefully selected for their warm atmosphere and good facilities, and all are regularly inspected to ensure that high accommodation standards are maintained.

They are located within 10-30 minutes travelling distance of AIL Madrid, and all are in safe neighborhoods with good metro and bus connections.

Prior to your arrival, we will ask you to fill out a preference questionnaire, to find a host family that matches your expectations.

The accommodation included in the package price of the programme is a single room with full board (breakfast, packed lunch and dinner).

Should you require a different type of accommodation, please get in contact with us. If 2 pupils come together, accommodation can be arranged in the same family or in two different families that live close by. Accommodation is available from Sunday to Saturday. Extra nights are available upon request. Subject to availability Curfew: Should you require a specific curfew to be put in place, please let us know so that we can inform the host family. Please note, for students aged 17 or under, host families are the only type of accommodation that we offer.

      • Intensive tuition group and private classes
      • Accommodation in Spanish host family, single room, full board (breakfast, packed lunch and dinner)
      • All learning materials
      • 5 Fun After Class Activities
      • Student services help desk with multilingual assistance
      • Free access to our self study centre
      • Free access to the Internet from 9.00 am to 10.00 pm via WiFi or AIL Madrid’s modern interactive touch screen computers
      • Access to our library filled with level-based Spanish books
      • Language exchange service
      • 24h emergency number
      • End of course assessment certificate
      • At AIL Madrid you won't miss any classes due to public holidays. We are the only Spanish School in Madrid which makes up all classes and activities, independent of the course type, the length of booking, the number of public holidays in the week and the time of year.

By taking your Spanish revision course in the country where the language is spoken you will not only greatly improve you general Spanish skills but also your all-round understanding of the language. You will learn about Spanish culture and customs and experience first-hand the Spanish way of life, gaining invaluable knowledge you can then apply during your exam.

    • Yes, parents can stay in host families with their children dependant on the family’s accommodation availability. It is important to note though that this may detract from the child’s learning curve, as they will most likely speak less Spanish with the host family than otherwise.

    • The teacher will create a study plan according to the objectives of the student and what areas of weakness they might have in Spanish. The more information they have about the students’ Spanish level the better, so that the teacher can plan to improve these areas. Some students opt for general GCSE/A Level revision, covering all the key areas (reading , listening, speaking, writing), while others prefer to focus on a specific area.

    • Yes, the course can be booked without accommodation included. For pricing, please consult with our Student Care Team

    • AIL host families are all in central Madrid with a maximum of a 30 minutes commute by public transport, though many are much closer to the academy.

    • The priority when deciding your children’s placement will be their level of Spanish, thus ensuring they get the most out of their classes. With 15-25 groups at all levels running year round, it is very likely we will have two groups available at the same time even if the students are different levels, though it is not something we can guarantee 100%. Having said this, as long as the course is booked in advance and this request is made on booking, this arrangement can be made in the vast majority of cases. If the students have the same level of Spanish, they should be in the same class anyway.

    • Parents are more than welcome to come with their son/daughter and take a Spanish course or simply enjoy Madrid. In such cases, we can offer you a variety of accommodation options, including host family, hostel or hotel. If this option appeals, please contact us for more details and prices.

    • No! We welcome groups of all ages and have housing options available that suite each group’s needs.

    • Students will not be accompanied to school each day: Madrid is an incredibly safe city with one of the best public transportation systems in the world! It’s easy to use and very intuitive. In addition, all our families live in central neighbourhoods (within the area marked by the metro line 6), which a maximum distance of 30 minutes from the school by public transport.

    • To arrange a group trip, we ask that each group have 5 students or more. That said, if you have 2, 3 or 4 students, AIL Madrid can offer some fantastic discounts if you sign up together. Don’t hesitate to ask!

    • When all students in a group have a similar age and level, we create classes of 10 people comprised solely from your group. And the same goes for activities! However, if your students are over 16 years old and want to integrate into our regular courses and activities, we can arrange for them to join the general classes best suited to their level.

    • When selecting their housing, students can choose from a single or double room. The price will then include utilities (gas, light, water), WIFI, and a landline to receive and make calls within Spain. It also includes towels, sheets, basic cleaning products, and a weekly cleaning service in shared living spaces.

    • Each one bedroom apartment has a double bed or two single beds. The price includes utilities (air conditioning, light, water), as well as WIFI, a weekly cleaning service, and towels and sheets that are cleaned weekly.

    • To begin, students should choose from single or double rooms. The price will then include full board (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) from Monday to Saturday, as well as towels and sheets that are washed weekly with your clothing. It also includes a daily cleaning service for bedrooms and bathrooms (except Sundays and holidays). Finally, it includes WIFI, a landline to make and receive calls, and a fan in each bedroom.

    • The price includes a daily halfboard (breakfast and dinner), WIFI, a landline to make and receive calls to and from other Spanish landlines, and towels and sheets that are washed weekly with your clothing.

    • Our shared flats are located in central neighborhoods of Madrid and are all well connected by public transportation (within 30 minutes of the center).

    • There is usually an average of 4 to 7 students living in each flat at once.

    • All of our flats, families, and residences have a high speed WIFI connection.

    • AIL’s host families are carefully selected to ensure that all students enjoy their stay and are treated as members of the family. Our families can be anyone from single people to couples or families with small or grown children.

    • The best part about staying with a host family is practicing your Spanish and immersing yourself in Spanish culture. With this goal in mind, our families only speak Spanish with our students.

    • The deposit has two purposes: to reserve your room and to guarantee payment. For security reasons, we require the deposit for the entirety of your stay: the student must leave the room in the same state they found it. If there is no damage found in the room/accommodation at the end of your stay, your deposit will be returned to you within 7 days of your departure. If damages are found, we will subtract the amount required for repairs from the deposit and return the rest.

    • In the event of cancellations prior to arrival, any upfront payments will be considered as a non returnable payment for accommodation (subject to a one month limit). In the event of cancellations after arrival, one month's notice of accommodation cancellation is required. Following this notice period, all additional accommodation amounts paid will be reimbursed in full.

    • Private bathrooms can be requested and these have a supplement of 105€ per week. Please note however that we have limited private bathroom options so booking is subject to availability.

    • Madrid is one of the top two safest cities in Europe, and its only getting safer! Each year Madrid law enforcement agencies review and improve their approach, ensuring that crime rates drop each year from their already very low numbers. While there is an occasional pick pocket, the majority of our students of all ages feel safer here than in their home towns- something their parents confirm after visiting! That said, things happen and AIL Madrid wants its university preparation students to feel comforted that if they need help they have someone to call at any time, day or night. In the case of any problem that should occur we ask our students to call our 24-hour emergency contact number: 607 959 887.

    • If your child is under 18 years old, we require them to live with one of our loving, native Spanish host families, to ensure they get the attention, care, and security they need. This provides a fantastic way for them to practice Spanish at home, immerse themselves in the culture, and have a strong support system during their stay here in Madrid If they are over 18, they also have the opportunity to live in a student dormitory or in a shared flat for student under 30. Either of these options will give your child a strong social network, with friends from all over the world, and as well as a secure home in a residential area of Madrid. All of our accommodation options are carefully vetted or provided directly by AIL Madrid, to ensure your child is always in safe hands!

    • The Mediterranean diet is one of the most popular in the world for a reason: with fresh, locally produced vegetables, fish, and meat, our students come to class with energy and a sense of general well being. If they’re staying with a host family, they have the added benefit of home cooked meals with the family, or, if they’re in the dorms, a fun dining hall atmosphere with friends. In the shared flats, they have the opportunity to select their food independently from Spain’s numerous supermarkets, cafes, and restaurants. No matter what you choose, they are sure to enjoy some of the country’s finest tapas and paellas!

    • Madrid has an incredible amount of dietary options: most supermarkets have gluten free sections (even the mom and pop shops on the corner), and all of them provide lactose free products. Most restaurants also provide allergy information, so your child is sure to be able to avoid upsetting foods. We will also make sure that their host families know about any dietary restrictions in advance.

    • A lot of parents worry about their children going a little wild when they leave home but, in Spain, drinking culture is more social and less binge focused. Your child is far more likely to learn to have a responsible glass of wine with dinner than anything else, especially if they’re staying with a host family.

    • Students have different spending patterns based on their interests and habits in Madrid, so it depends a little on what you’d like to provide them with. In recent years, prices in general have increased slightly, but the cost of living in Madrid remains lower than most other European capitals, especially with daily expenses such as food and public transportation. The cost of rent will most likely will be the most expensive factor of the student’s stay in Madrid but AIL provides several affordable accommodation options to help keep things reasonable.

A few examples of standard Madrid prices:

      Coffee: 1.50€

      Lunch (3 courses): 9-15€

      Movie Ticket: 5-10€

Monthly Metro Pass (Zone A, under 26): 20€

Monthly metro Pass (Zone A, over 26): 54€

    • Your student can choose to enter almost any field of their choosing and our advisors are happy to help walk you through this decision. In Spain, students enter directly into one field of study, so the exams they are preparing for will be related directly to their chosen field. To begin the process, discuss your child’s interests with them, or get recommendations from their AIL academic advisor.

    • Each student should view our planning checklist in advance, but the 6 most important items to review are:

      1. Make sure your child has an up to date passport, valid for the entire duration of their stay (for university preparation, at least one year from the start of the program)

      2. Determine whether they need a student visa and if so, make sure you allow sufficient time to obtain one. Study visas are required for all non-EU nationals entering Spain for a period of greater than 3 months and for residents of certain countries no matter the duration of the stay. Please see our Study Visa page for more information about obtaining visas in Spain.

      3. Organize international health insurance and travel insurance.

      4. See your doctor before you go.

      5. Be sure to bring a sufficient supply of any prescriptions you require.

      6. Think about what countries you may want to visit while you are here and be sure to obtain any recommended vaccinations/medications.

    • The medical field in Spain is highly advanced and easily accessible: AIL Madrid offers travel and medical insurance to its students so that they may travel safely. We are happy to answer any questions regarding the terms and conditions of our student travel and medical insurance. Once you’ve purchased insurance, the company will provide you with a list of available doctors and services covered in Madrid.

    • In this day and age, it’s incredibly easy to keep in touch with your loved ones, no matter where you are! AIL Madrid offers smart phone rentals, so you can keep in touch daily via whatsapp, email, and skype. The Madrid airport is also incredibly well connected, offering direct flights to locations all over the world, so visiting is easy!

    • The transport network is divided up into various zones, formed by concentric circles spreading out from the heart of Madrid. Zone A is the most central, surrounded by zones B1, B2, B3, C1, C2 E1 y E2. The price of your ticket will increase as you move away from zone A, but with the help of the metro map (which clearly outlines the different zones) you will always know exactly what ticket you need.

Unless you are planning an excursion to the nearby mountains, or to the neighboring towns (Alcala de Henares, Arranjuez, Toledo etc.), you are unlikely to ever venture out of zone A as all the main tourist sites, places of interest, AIL Madrid, and your accommodation (if we organize this for you) are located here.

    • Tuition

Our tuition covers all courses offered in the Spanish University Preparation Program for the enrolled terms: General Spanish Language Course, Specialty Spanish Language Course, General University Preparation Course, and our Fun Afternoon Activities.

      Guidance and Tutelage

The price of the Spanish University Foundation Course also includes the availability to the student of a personal advisor to help with university admission questions, preparation for admission exams, and any other student questions or concerns. In addition, the tuition includes academic progress tests and regular one-on-one meetings with the student’s professor in order to assess the student’s progress in the program.

      Orientation week

New culture, new rules, and a new language: we know the transition into a new culture can be a lot! In order to make your transition easier, AIL Madrid offers an Orientation Week Program for its university preparation students, to help make the adjustment that much easier. The Orientation Week Program includes a student welcome evening with tapas and drinks, which will give the student the opportunity to meet and get to know your fellow classmates. In addition, AIL Madrid will give their university preparation students a guided city tour around Madrid. We will also organize a get together at a local establishment, where all the students and teachers can introduce themselves. In addition, we provide all the information you need about transportation around the city, siestas, neighborhoods, safety etc. Local information

Whether you decide to go abroad for a couple of weeks, a year, or more, it is incredibly important to have enough knowledge about the destination and to be well-informed about the cultural differences, local laws and local customs. AIL Madrid provides its students with information about Madrid e.g. the neighborhoods (barrios), services (shops, restaurants, etc.) things to do (sightseeing, museums, etc.), cultural differences, things to look out for and be careful about, as well as many other tips and useful local information.

      Learning Materials

The grammar books that are used in our Spanish classes are included in the standard tuition as well as several additional learning materials.

    • To help you make the best possible and most relaxing start to your Spanish study holiday, AIL offers an airport transfer pick up service. An AIL representative will wait for you in the Arrivals hall and will be instantly recognizable as he or she will be holding a clearly labeled large marker with your name on it. Our Spanish and English speaking representative will already have your accommodation details and will take you straight there… and don’t worry, if your flight is delayed, our representative will wait! If you would like to reserve this please let us know at the time of booking and if you need a single journey or a return trip.
      One way: 75€
      Return: 125€

    • To secure your place on the course and book your accommodation, a 200 Euros upfront payment is required. This amount will be deducted from the total amount due. If you choose to stay in a student residence and/or require AIL Madrid to send you a visa invitation letter, the upfront payment required is higher. Please consult for details.

When you are in Madrid it is important to have internet access to stay in contact with your friends and family at home. Most cafes and coffee shops have free wifi, which is usually made clear by a wifi sticker on the window or door. Inside, if the password is not posted clearly, just ask an employee and they’ll help you connect. If you’re traveling without your own device, try a “locutorio” (internet café) in the centre of Madrid where you can pay to use the internet by minutes or hours.

Tip: Skype and Whatsapp are excellent ways to keep in touch with your family and they’re free!

        Telephones

If you wish to adopt a Spanish number for your stay in Madrid, you can easily purchase a local SIM card from one of the many providers in the city. Movistar is the most popular company for its phone plans, while companies such as Vodafone and Orange are also widely available. You can also make calls from telephone booths in the street, bars or “locutorio”.

        Post Offices

If you want to send a letter or postcard to someone, you can buy your stamps in the tobacco stores, all of which have the “tabacos” logo. You can post your letter or postcard in a mailbox or you can go to the post office (Correos).

Tip: In the barrio Chueca you can find the Casa Postal (Libertad 37), they offer more than 500.000 different postcards!

      3. Protect yourself from unforeseen circumstances! Cancellation Insurance is available for 5% of the total sum of the full program invoice, provides coverage for the cost of your course and accommodation, and is valid from the date of purchase until the end of your course. The insurance fee must be paid in full at the time of reservation and does not cover the enrollment fee, services already used at the time of cancellation, the cost of the insurance itself, or your travel costs.

Your cancellation insurance is personal, non-transferable, and can easily be applied to save you from stress in these situations: work, examination, proven illness by a Spanish doctor of the student following their arrival in Spain or proven illness in their home country prior to their arrival, pregnancy, or obligatory military service. Cancellation insurance will not take effect if the student has received the invitation letter for study visa application.

Cancellation insurance will give you the security of knowing you will receive a refund within 15 days from date we receive your cancellation documentation, and will be transferred to the student’s account or account of origin (AIL Madrid will not refund this amount to any other person or account).
