Learn Spanish during the most wonderful time of the year, in Madrid! The winding, antique streets are festooned with unique, twinkling lights and lead to Christmas markets scented with roasting chestnuts. Children, groups of friends, and couples run excitedly towards the ice skating rink set up between the majestic opera house and the palace, and enormous Christmas trees stand proudly in the main squares of the city. The AIL Madrid team and students, like many other groups of friends and family, collect the many tasty holiday treats of the season (turrón, Roscón de Reyes, chocolate and churros) in preparation of the exciting, weeks long celebration. The school is decked out, energy is high and full, and learning Spanish is more fun than ever! And in January, it only gets better: the three king’s parade is held on the evening of January 5th and then the craziest, most incredible sales of the year begin in shops all over the city.
Discover the ancient tradition of Semana Santa (The Holy Week) while learning the language that goes with it! A mixture of concerts, exhibitions, solemn processions and a string of meaningful ceremonies, this week is one of the most picturesque Madrid has to offer. Enjoy Spanish classes, themed activities, and workshops dedicated to discussing the history and observation of Easter week, followed by a day of full immersion in the event itself. The weather this time of year is already perfect for strolls through Retiro park in spring clothing, or a quick weekend trip to the beach!
Madrid leaves turn a special, vibrant yellow around this time of year, though the days are always sunny and softly warm. The city’s residents gear up with incredible energy for Halloween, a day they take very seriously, as well as All Saints Day (for which they have special, donut-esque cookies). Throughout the city there are a series of parties, concerts, costume competitions, haunted houses, and more! Here are AIL, we turn the reception into a mini haunted house and everyone dresses up- from professors and team members to students and friends! It’s a week you won’t want to miss, so book your classes now!
