Club 50+ Spanish Course by Ana Ballesteros, Spanish Teacher at AIL Madrid

Hello, my name is Ana and I have been teaching Spanish at AIL Madrid for more than five years.

Throughout the years I have given classes to students of all ages, from a 6 year-old girl and her doll named Lucy to an 80 year-old globe-trotting Aussie, who fluently spoke 6 languages and was eager to make Spanish number 7… and Japanese number 8 ;). You will be surprised by how many students aged 50+ are interested in our language and culture. And what’s special about them? Well, precisely the happiness and enthusiasm that these young at heart, fun loving students bring to the classroom having finished their studies years ago. The 50+ students enjoy learning, do it for pleasure and for this reason they are open to whatever task or activity. They share their stories, liven up classes laughing and joking, are not at all self conscious and are always in a good mood. It’s extremely rewarding to see their expectations for self-improvement fulfilled and to watch the older students gain confidence and make progress day by day. The Club 50+ students inspire me making me realise that my language learning days are far from finished. All in one – they are lovely and create a very pleasant environment to work in!

Spanish Classes

There are 20 classes per week in the Club 50+ program that take place in reduced classes of a maximum of 8 persons. Such small class sizes enable the teacher to dedicate more time individually to students and therefore incorporate their needs into the class content. The course emphasis is firmly placed on communication skills and the topics covered by our qualified teachers get everyone talking and make the lessons much more enjoyable, productive and interesting. This way, you definitely learn how to express yourself in Spanish! Whether you are a beginner or are an advanced learner, we have the right course level for you. Club 50+ students are placed in groups based on their level of Spanish (assessed before your arrival to Madrid) and therefore should expect to be in classes with students of all ages, not just other students on the Club 50+ program. Moreover, if there are any bank holidays when you come to Madrid, don’t worry, all classes and activities will be made up for!

Cultural and Touristic Activities Program

At AIL Madrid, we know that our Club 50+ students are looking for much more than just learning Spanish. They want to have a wonderful time, taste the delicacies of the Spanish cuisine, explore Madrid and discover the secrets of Spanish culture. Therefore we have carefully selected diverse activities for every afternoon or evening of your stay. Those activities take place with a teacher from AIL Madrid, your guide to the Spanish way of life who will constantly make you practice Spanish, giving explanations in an approachable and an easy-to-understand way. A sample itinerary, to be found below, includes visits to the top sights of interest and museums, dance performances, tapas and wine tasting, cookery classes, excursions and cultural workshops. During the different activities you get to know other 50+ students from different countries with whom you not only practice Spanish but share stories and unforgettable moments!

AIL Madrid can arrange such excursion for you on weekends with an English and Spanish speaking guide. Please consult AIL Madrid's team after your arrival for detailed information.

Flamenco shows, concerts or theatre nights

Madrid is also known as the 'city that never sleeps'. Every night there are several flamenco shows, concerts and theatres in Madrid. Besides this, there are many restaurants and bars where you can watch flamenco shows while enjoying your dinner or drink. These restaurants are all well known as their menus are full of typical Spanish cuisine: grilled meat and fish, tapas, sausages, and a large selection of wines. More information about flamenco shows, concerts and theatre is available from our reception staff.
